Ethiopia, a multi-ethnic country in the Horn of Africa, is the 14th most populous country in the world. With more than 80 different ethnic groups in Ethiopia, the official languages include: Amharic, Oromo, Somali, Tigrinya, and Afar.
Though it is a founding member of the UN and considered by many to be an emerging power, Ethiopia has struggled due to multiple factors. For example, high rates of poverty and infectious diseases, a history of ethnic discrimination, and high maternal and infant mortality rates. That said, progress has been made over the past 10-20 years, and the Ethiopian diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world.
Ethiopian Diet
Central to the diet is injera—a sourdough flatbread made from teff—which serves as a base for flavorful, often spicy stews known as wat. Common dishes include lentil/chickpea stews (shiro), sauteed greens (gomen), and chicken or beef stews (doro wat). The cuisine is heavily vegetable-focused, and fasting traditions rely heavily on plant-based proteins. Meals are taken in a communal style, with diners using their right hands to tear off injera and scoop up food. This places emphasis on community fellowship and respect.
The Ethiopian cuisine relies on minimally processed ingredients, which may contribute to the country’s low obesity rate (~3%), though a Western influence and increased urbanization are making access to highly processed snack foods more prevalent.
Ethiopian Fitness
Ethiopia is world-renowned for its long-distance running culture, with athletes like Abebe Bikila and Haile Gebrselassie influencing national sports culture. Traditional diets and homemade, simple foods support high endurance activity.
As of 2024, wellness trends in Ethiopia included digital health technologies, a resurgence of indigenous birthing practices, and a growing emphasis on mental health.
