The Arabic Department at DLS held a PopSpeak session on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 9:00 -11:10 am providing eight students with an engaging opportunity to practice Arabic in an interactive and immersive setting. The session featured five rotating speaking stations, each led by a native Arabic-speaking instructor and centered around a different subject, allowing students to experience a variety of speaking styles and expressions.
A Chance to Practice Arabic Beyond the Classroom
Throughout the session, students participated in conversations covering a range of familiar and practical topics. The format encouraged students to speak spontaneously, respond to questions, express their ideas, and use Arabic beyond the structured classroom environment. Instructors adjusted their questions and conversations to the students’ proficiency levels, creating an environment where students could actively participate and build confidence in their speaking abilities.
What Students Said About PopSpeak
Student feedback was very positive. All eight students expressed their enjoyment of the activity and enthusiasm for the opportunity to interact with different instructors. Their engagement went beyond the planned discussions, with students even brainstorming additional subjects they would like to discuss in future sessions. They also expressed excitement about having another PopSpeak session soon, preferably in early November. The students’ enthusiasm and active participation reflected how much they valued having an additional opportunity to use Arabic naturally and spontaneously.
A Cultural Finish With Arabic Treats and Coffee
At the end of the session, the students enjoyed a selection of Arabic treats, including mana’eesh, basbousa, klaija, and chocolate, along with authentic Arabic coffee. This provided a warm and enjoyable way to conclude the activity while adding a cultural element to the experience.
