What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the Nepali language or culture?
One thing I wish more people knew about Nepali, the way you speak always reflects respect and closeness. It is common for people to refer to one another as “Dai” (older brother), “Didi” (older sister), or “Aama” (mother), which creates a feeling of family among everyone.
How has your background influenced your work at DLS?
My Nepali background has significantly influenced my presence at DLS. I come from a strong tradition of treating people like family, which motivates me to show respect through both my words and my active listening. Additionally, the values of hard work and trustworthiness, which are central to my Nepali heritage, play a vital role in my life.
What’s a word or phrase in Nepali that you think everyone should know?
I would choose the word “Hajur” because it is a lovely term that can mean “yes,” “pardon?” or “I’m listening.” It conveys respect, kindness, and warmth all at once. When you say it to someone, you are not just providing a response; you are also showing that you value them.
How do you stay connected to your culture while living abroad?
I stay connected to my culture by speaking Nepali at home, cooking traditional Nepali dishes, and celebrating festivals like Dashain and Tihar (Diwali) with my family. I also listen to Nepali music, watch videos from Nepal, and call relatives back home, which helps me feel close to my roots even while living abroad.
How do you recharge outside work?
I recharge by spending quality time with my family and participating in my children’s activities. I enjoy cooking Nepali food and being outdoors, whether it involves going for walks or simply appreciating nature. Additionally, I like to unwind by listening to music, reading, and reflecting quietly. This helps me reset and return to work with more energy and patience.
